Great news, apartment dwellers: The latest gardening trend doesn’t require a yard! The enchanting Kokedama Hanging Plants only need a semi-sunny spot and a little love to thrive.

Kokedamas, which literally means, “moss ball” in Japanese, are charming, hanging plants that showcase a beautiful sphere of lush moss with a pretty houseplant growing from within. We’ve spotted the technique everywhere lately, but it wasn’t until the new book from the experts at Sprout Home, that we realized how easy they are to make ourselves.

 

This gorgeous green kokedama DIY comes from Tara Heibel and Tassy de Give’s Rooted in Design: Sprout Home’s Guide to Creative Indoor Planting ($16, amazon.com). ”Kokedama is a free-form planting method that derives from bonsai,” the authors write. “Kokedamas are designed to dangle; by suspending them in the air with colorful twine, you can create a hanging garden for inside your home or even outdoors in the warmer season.”

iHeartMedia Introduces New Original Audio Programs

Javaris Crittenton Guilty Sentenced 23 Years In Prison

Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton found Guilty in the 2011 shooting death of a 22-year-old mother of 4 and sentenced to 23 Years In Prison.


Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton pled guilty to manslaughter in the 2011 shooting death of a 22-year-old mother of 4 … and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

As we previously reported, Crittenton — a 1st round pick in the 2007 NBA Draft — was initially charged with murder for killing Julian Jones in a drive-by shooting in Atlanta.

But Crittenton struck a deal with prosecutors in which he agreed to plead guilty to the lesser voluntary manslaughter with a weapon charge and aggravated assault with a firearm. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the murder charge and Crittenton got 23 years in the clink. 

During the hearing, Javaris apologized for the killing — started to cry — and said it was all a terrible mistake.

In the past, officials said they believed Javaris was out for retaliation against a rival gang member on the day of the shooting … but ended up shooting Jones instead, who had just put her kids to bed.Source link

Jayne Meadows dead at 95

Jayne Meadows, a longtime television actress who was the widow of TV legend Steve Allen and the elder sister of actress Audrey Meadows, died of natural causes at her home in Encino, Calif., on Sunday night. She was 95.

Meadows was thrice nominated for Emmys, the first time for a 1977 episode of the PBS show Meeting of Minds, the second time in 1987 for an episode of NBC’s St. Elsewhere on which she guested and the third time in 1996 for supporting actress in a comedy for CBS show High Society.

Over a showbiz career that spanned six-plus decades, Meadows took to the Broadway stage — in The Gazebo in 1958 — appeared in films including 1946’s Undercurrent, starring Katharine Hepburn; toured in her one-woman show Powerful Women in History for seven years; appeared with Allen onstage in A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters off and on for 11 years; and was a regular panelist on the hit CBS gameshow I’ve Got a Secret.

Her son Bill Allen, the president and CEO of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. and a former showbiz executive, issued a statement: She was not only an extraordinarily gifted actress who could move audiences from laughter to tears and back again all in one scene, but she was the greatest storyteller I have ever known and I will miss her endlessly fascinating and frequently hilarious anecdotes about her life and the many brilliantly talented people she worked with and befriended along the way. She was also the most loving mother and grandmother I could ever imagine, seeing only the best in all her family members and giving us all confidence that we had value to offer the world and should take risks because we could do no wrong in her eyes. ​She will be sorely missed and never forgotten.

Jane Meadows Cotter, whose parents were missionaries, was born in Wuchang, China, and only learned English when the family returned to the U.S. in the 1930s.

Jayne Meadows received the Susan B. Anthony Award for her continued positive portrayals of women in her acting.

The actress remained active until 2009, when she fell and fractured her hip. She made her last public appearance in August 2009 at the Early TV Memories First-Class Commemorative Stamp Dedication Ceremony.

Meadows was twice married, the first time to writer, actor and director Milton Krims. That marriage ended in divorce in 1954. She was married to Allen (the first host of The Tonight Show) from 1954 until his death in 2000. Her sister Audrey Meadows, who starred with Jackie Gleason on The Honeymooners, died in 1996.

In addition to her son Bill, she is survived by three stepchildren from Allen’s first marriage, Stephen Jr., Brian and David, as well as by grandchildren.

Live Nation Adds Bonnaroo to 60 Top Music Festivals

Live Nation today added Bonnaroo to its portfolio of 60 music festivals that already includes Austin City Limits Music Festival, Lollapalooza and the Electric Daisy Carnival. Live Nation Entertainment has acquired a controlling interest in the Bonnaroo music festival. Founding partners, Superfly and AC Entertainment will continue to operate the iconic event.

“Partnering with Live Nation is a milestone for Bonnaroo. It opens up tremendous opportunities for us to continue to evolve the Bonnaroo experience in an exciting, powerful way,” said Ashley Capps, founder, AC Entertainment. Additionally, Live Nation now also owns a share of the Bonnaroo property, Great Stage Park, also known as “the Farm.” Investment in the site and enhancements to the festival experience are planned.

Preserving Louisiana’s version of the French language

VILLE PLATTE, La. — Qui c’est qui parle? Jim Soileau asked, his baritone filling the studio of radio station KVPI and traveling across the Cajun prairie.
Who’s speaking?

It was a Monday morning, and the phone lines were open for La Tasse de Café (The Cup of Coffee), one of the last vestiges of French-language talk programming on Louisiana radio.

Mr. Soileau, 77, arrived at the station before daybreak to announce the news in French. At 8 a.m., he joined the station’s general manager, Mark Layne, to welcome the voices that began trickling in from the rice farms, tiny towns and two-lane highways in and around Evangeline Parish.

Some callers were senior citizens, eager to reminisce in the fluent French they had learned around their parents’ breakfast tables. Some were younger, and clumsier with the language. There were the regular callers, like Buffy from Mamou, who riffed on the news and the weather. There were the merely bilingual-curious and the clever conteurs telling wry tales of Louisiana life and often flip-flopping, like Mr. Soileau, from French to English and back.

A fixture at this family-owned radio station since the mid-1960s, La Tasse de Café serves as a forum for gossip and light amusement, a glorified small-town party line interrupted by Mr. Soileau’s love letters to local sponsors like Teet’s Food Store. (N’oubliez pas les spéciales, he said that Monday, les cuisses de poulet, chicken drumsticks, five-pound box, $3.45!)

But the show is also a conscious effort to sustain an iteration of French that followed its own evolutionary path here, far from the famed vigilance of the Académie Française. Many now believe Louisiana French to be endangered, even as other aspects of the state’s rural culture flourish amid the homogenizing forces of modern life.

We’re not losing the music. We’re not losing the food, Mr. Layne said from his office in Ville Platte, a city of 7,500 about two and a half hours west of New Orleans. But we’re losing what I think is the most important thing, which is the language.

The issues of language and culture tend to play out in complicated ways in Louisiana. Gov. Bobby Jindal, the son of Indian immigrants, has made a point of warning about Muslim immigrants who have not adapted to Western cultures and about any groups of people who would come to the United States to live in unassimilated enclaves and not learn English. The Cajuns here were once pushed to assimilate, specifically through laws discouraging them from speaking French in school. But today, their culture thrives in a conservative area, where patriotism runs neck and neck with fierce regional pride.

Mr. Soileau, for example, said he would be comfortable with English becoming the official language of the United States, but he added, I think the government should not dictate to you how you should speak.

So his show plays out as a lesson in a language swimming against the tide. According to census figures, Louisiana had more than 250,000 French speakers in 1990; by 2013 there were about 100,000.

A caller asked about a curious verb Mr. Soileau had used, cheter. What did that mean? To beg, he said, noting later that it probably could not be found in the dictionary.

How do you say groundhog? How about chiropractor?

Mr. Soileau, a veteran broadcaster, is recognized as an expert in the art of Louisiana French. His indispensable credential, in a primarily spoken language, is an education at his grandmother’s knee.

How to Harden Your Browser Against Malware and Privacy

One of the first lines of defense we have against the plague of security and privacy problems that stalk the internet resides within our browsers. This article is meant to help you to harden your Browser Against Malware and Privacy Concerns. However, do note that I would strongly suggest that even if your main concern is only about privacy you should still read through the security sections as well. Preventing your computer from communicating with potentially dangerous sites, and helping to avoid malware, plays a very important role in increasing your online privacy. Thus, protecting your privacy really does require that you also increase your security.
Also, note that for true protection you should also read my article about How to Stay Safe While Online. To achieve true privacy you should also read my article about How to Protect Your Online Privacy. The article you are currently reading is meant to be used in conjunction with both of these other articles. It is not really meant to be viewed in isolation, although it is certainly useful in that respect as well.
Notice that this article is not really as long as it seems. By this I mean that you really only need to navigate to the section applicable to the browser you are using. You really don’t even need to worry about the other sections. Also, note that all instructions are provided assuming thatno other changes to the configuration have been made. When configuring these browsers I installed them with default configurations and modified them from there. Also, unless otherwise noted, any instructions provided are applicable to all browsers within the below categories. Whenever specific browsers required different changes I noted that in my instructions.
If you are running Adobe Flash, as most people are, then there are a few changes to the settings you should make. Regardless of which browser you use you should modify your flash player settings to make sure that third-party flash cookies are disabled. If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 do this by going to the control panel on your computer. Then, if you have your Control Panel set to Category view, go to the subsection for “System and Security”. If you have the Control Panel set to Large Icons view, or Small Icons view, Flash should already be available. If you are running Windows XP you should go to the control panel and make sure that it is set to “Classic View”. At this point you should see the icon for “Flash Player”. Open it. Under the Storage tab make sure the option to “Block all sites from storing information on this computer” is selected. Also, under the Advanced tab make sure that the option to “Allow Adobe to install updates” is selected.
In addition, it’s important to know that Javais constantly being exploited in order to install malware on users computers. Also, the java plugin is not even needed for most sites to work properly. Thus, if the java plugin is in fact installed in your browser, my advice would be to remove it unless you find it necessary. In addition, assuming you uninstalled Java entirely from your computer, which I would recommend unless you are actively using it, you should also use the built-in Windows search to find the file “npDeployJava1.dll” on your C-drive and, if it exists, delete it. For some reason this file is not removed with the Java uninstaller. In addition, if there are any plugins you don’t use I would recommend that you remove them as well. These may pose a threat to your security.
2. Use A Privacy Focused Search Engine
Google’s search engine records your searches and aggressively tracks you. So do many of the other top search engines. For this reason I would suggest that you use an alternative search engine. One of the best anonymous search engines I’ve found is calledStartPage. This search engine allows you to search using Google’s search engine, but it blocks Google’s ability to track you. Its not quite as powerful as using Google alone, but it’s definitely a very good search engine. More information can be found onthis page, and an explanation of how to make it the default search engine of your browser can be found onthis page. The same company that makes StartPage also makes a search engine calledIxquick. This gathers its results from many different sources and thus may be even more useful than StartPage. More information about it can be found onthis page, and an explanation of how to make it the default search engine of your browser can be found onthis page. Both search engines have been certified by an independent third-party to not record your IP address or use tracking cookies.
Another very good option is calledDuckDuckGo. This search engine will also not record any information about your searches. DuckDuckGo gathers its search results from a compilation of many sources. It also displays possible answers to the question you asked right at the top of the results page. It can be a very useful search engine. More information about DuckDuckGo can be found onthis page, and a link to add it to your browser is provided on the main search page.
3. Modify Your Current Browser To Achieve Improved Security And Privacy
4.Alternatively Use JonDoFox To Greatly Improve Your Privacy
Note that for this browser I am not even considering security or usability concerns. This browser is truly oriented mainly towards privacy. For a more balanced approach please see my advice above. In addition to using this browser I would also advise that you change your default search engine to onewhich is discussedinsection 2.
To surf the web with even greater anonymity than can be achieved with any of the above browsers, download JonDoFox from this pageand install it. During installation it will prompt you to have it download Firefox. Assuming you don’t already have Firefox installed let it install it for you. However, if you already have Firefox installed it will ask you whether you want to merge it with your Firefox configuration. You must either do that or install it as a portable browser. The choice is yours.
During the installation it will ask you if you want to download JonDo, which is a proxy program. I would recommend that you do not and instead use a virtual private network (VPN). This will provide you with an encrypted connection, much faster browsing speed, and an even higher level of privacy. To choose the best VPN for your needs please readthis section of my article about How to Protect Your Privacy While Online. Make sure that if you do choose to use a VPN, you start it up each time before using JonDoFox to browse the internet. Also, if you do decide to use a VPN you should start upJonDoFox, left-click on the JonDoFox icon, and select the option for “No Proxy”. When prompted you should also select the option to not show warnings about the proxy.
At this point JonDoFox is ready for you to begin browsing the internet with a very high level of privacy. No further changes are required for the configuration and no additional add-ons are required.
5. Periodically Clear Browsing Data
Even if the configuration changes suggested above some browsing data will still get saved to your computer. In addition you should be aware that the advice I give above will not prevent flash cookies from being stored on your computer from the site you are visiting. You have only disabled this for third-parties. Thus, to clear these flash cookies, and most other browsing data which may be on your computer, you may want to periodically clean your computer with a program called CCleaner. To download ityou should download the Portable version fromthis pageto avoid inadvertantly installing unwanted software.
After installing it there is one change you must make in order for it to clear flash cookies, as well as normal cookies and other browsing data. Please click on the Cleaner icon and go to the Applications tab. Then, under the Multimedia section, make sure that “Adobe Flash Player” is selected. Once you have made sure that CCleaner is configured properly you just make sure that all other programs are closed and then click on the button to “Run CCleaner”. Running this periodically will help to increase your online privacy.

I realize that the configuration options, and available add-ons/extensions, for these browsers change over time. Thus I need your help in staying up to date with the best ways to protect all of these browsers from both safety and privacy concerns. Please help me by letting me know when you believe the advice I am providing is no longer entirely accurate, or that new approaches are now available.
